Bio:
Hope of Bastion School (Escuela Esperanza de Bastion) is located in Bastion Popular, a former squatter community on the edge of the hot, humid city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Founded in a time when the community did not have access to public education, the school began as a way to provide poorer families with quality education. More than just a school, Hope of Bastion School’s primary purpose is to share the good news of Jesus with its students and their families. Because children in Bastion grow up in a community where violence, abuse, drugs, and broken families are the norm, the school desires to provide an alternative to this generation. The school believes that in order for education to create a lasting change, hearts also need to be changed through Jesus’ redeeming love. Almost 20 years since the school’s foundation, it has grown from a one room kindergarten to a fully functional school, ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade. The school sees 180 kids pass through its doors every academic day. Hope of Bastion School has 20 staff members (half of whom are from the Bastion community), a gymnasium, a kitchen, a computer lab, and a modern library with 2500 titles which is open to the public. In addition to the academic curriculum, the school offers a variety of clubs including painting, cooking, computer skills, crafts, music, and sports. Because the Hope of Bastion is a private Christian school there is no government funding but runs primarily on financial support sent from North America. The child sponsorship program connects each sponsor with a child in the school and significant relationships have developed through this program. The Sponsorship Program covers more than 80% of the school’s expenses. The remainder is provided by individual gifts designated for the Hope of Bastion School.
